This is a detailed analysis of the making of the Winchester Bibles, two of the great twelfth century English illuminated Bibles. The author (1903–1987), who was a schoolmaster and eventually vice-chancellor of Oxford University, examined these Bibles closely over a period of forty-seven years. His earlier work, The Artists of the Winchester Bible (1945), was regarded as a pioneering effort, and both works are “authoritative and influential” (DNB).
