William Roberts (1767-1849), an English barrister and editor, published his four-volume biography of Hannah More (1745-1833) in 1834, shortly after More’s death. More was a poet, playwright, and prominent member of the Bluestockings. Her anti-slavery position, as well as her views on morality and religion, often made their way into her poetry and prose. Roberts’ biography was the first on More and includes many of her personal letters in full.
