We could find little information on Mrs. Ashton Yates, including dates. However, a New York Monthly Magazine review of A Winter in Italy reveals that it was much-recommended by contemporary audiences. The review reads: “There is no one among the notable features of this beautiful land which [Yates] does not place before the reader, in a form that either recalls it vividly to the memory, or impresses it on the imagination,” (The New York Monthly Magazine, 1844, vol. 72, pp 285-6).
