Amsterdam: Everhard Cloppenburgh, 1642. First edition of a striking and popular emblem book by the Dutch poet Jan Van der Veen (1578-1659), with illustrations by the influential printmaker and book illustrator Salomon Savery (1594-1678). There were at least six editions printed before 1669. The Title-page with large copper-engraved vignette by Salomon Savery, and fifty fine copper-engraved emblems in the text (4" x 5 1/2"). Emblem #XIV is a cancel, as usual. Occasional light foxing. A very good copy. With the bookplate of the "Bibliotheque de I.G. Schorsch" on front pastedown Contemporary vellum, with light soiling.
