[London: Day & Son, 1865]. First edition. Twenty-six leaves, printed on heavy card stock, containing fine chromolithographic decorations on both sides. On one side of each card is a Bible verse, printed in black and red on a gold background; on the other side is a full-color illustration on a gold background. Both illustrations and text are within elaborate illuminated borders. Bindingly lightly soiled, front hinge cracked but sound. A very good, bright copy. Publisher's red cloth, decoratively stamped in gilt and aqua on both covers, gilt spine. (Item ID: 15965)


A fine example of Victorian chromolithography by one of the masters of the art form. Owen Jones (1809-1874), a Welsh architect and ornamental designer, is well-known for his chromolithographic books, of which this is a fine example His other books include Ancient Spanish Ballads (1841), The Sermon on the Mount (1844), Gray’s Elegy Illuminated… (1846), Scenes from the ‘Winter’s Tale’ (1866), and the monumental Grammar of Ornament (1866).
