Young’s work originally appeared as The Complaint, or Night Thoughts on Life, Death, and Immortality (1742). The first edition of Tourneur’s (1736-1788) translation also appeared in 1769. It was praised by Diderot and became extremely popular, fueling a French interest in English Romanticism. Tourneur later produced a highly esteemed prose translation of Shakespeare’s plays (1776-82), as well as translations of Richardson’s Clarissa and Ossian’s poems
