New York: Rudd & Carleton, 1858. First edition of this account by an officer’s wife of experiences at the frontier posts of Texas. The author’s husband, Egbert Viele (1825-1902), was a lieutenant in the U.S. infantry. He also served as chief engineer for both Central and Prospe Old pencil notations on title-page (“Gov. Rodman M. Price, Trenton New Jersey”), a terminal blank, and the first page of text (p. 13). The last of these consists of doggerel verse regarding a soldier’s life. Some light foxing. Overall very good. Rodman Price (1816-1894) played an active part in the American occupation of California, and later served as governor of New Jersey, in which capacity he was instrumental in establishing the state geological survey and instigated public school reform.
