Latham (1812-1888) studied at King’s College, Cambridge, and in Germany, Demnark and Norway. He was professor of English language and literature at University, College, London. He published widely in the areas of English grammar, lexicography (including a revision of Johnson’s Dictionary), comparative philology, and ethnology. He was director of the ethnological department of the Crystal Palace, 1852. The present work is an innovative attempt to provide students with a textbook of English grammar according to the principles of formal logic.
