In addition to the twelve original plates, this copy has been extra-illustrated with sixty-five portraits of contemporary personnages, and an ink translation of a Lafayette letter. Most of the extra illustrations are fine engravings from books of the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, including portraits of Lafayette, Rousseau, Napoleon and Josephine, Voltaire, Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Robespierre, Madame de Staëhl, Danton, Chateaubriand, Beaumarchais, etc. The translation is of a letter of testimonial written by Lafayette in 1825, for Eshvick Evans, an American patriot and former member of the New Hampshire legislature.
