The True Intellectual System of the Universe…
Cudworth, Ralph.

London: Printed for Richard Royston, 1678. First edition. Former owner’s ink inscription on front free endpaper, dated 1752. A very good, clean copy. Contemporary calf, rebacked to style, though gilt stamping is a little crude, edges sprinkled red. Folio. [xx], 899, [1, blank], [ (Item ID: 11241)

This is the main work of Ralph Cudworth (1617-1688), a leader of the group known as the “Cambridge Platonists.” It is an answer to Hobbes’ Leviathan. Cudworth contrasts the tenets of the materialists (Democritus, Lucretius) with the idealism of Plato and Aristotle. Lengthy developments aim at refuting paganism and atheism “with all the reasons that his reading could supply.”
