Binary counters, the forerunners of digital computer circuitry, were developed in the 1930s to count nuclear events detected by Geiger-Muller counters. This paper describes the development of the first counter built out of vacuum tubes, instead of thyratrons—tubes filled with mercury vapor. The vacuum-tube counter was approximately thirty times faster than previous counters based on thyratrons.
