First trade edition (preceded by a special edition in two volumes, published the previous year in an edition of 1,000 copies, which contained seven reproductions of horn-books and battledores). Engraved frontispiece, forty-six full-page illustrations, plus numerous partial-page illustrations throughout. Three facsimile horn-books in a back pocket, including one of oak, one of card and one of horn. Front cover stamped in black and gilt. Lacks morocco spine label, one leaf of ads loose. A good, tight copy, with the horn-books in excellent condition. Original brown cloth, neatly rebacked with original spine laid down. Large, squarish quarto. xvii, 486 + [4, ads, printed on rectos only] pp. Item #7948

A printed label on the back pocket states: “The ivory horn-book is of a type which was unknown to the writer until after the appearance of the first (two volume edition, now out of print, of this ‘History.’” The standard work on the subject.
