Abercrombie (1780-1844) was a celebrated Edinburgh physician, especially noted with his work with the poor. In 1828 he became physician to the Scottish King. In 1835 he received an honorary M.D. from Oxford, and was elected Lord Rector of marischal College in Aberdeen. The present work was very popular in both the British Isles and America. It contains numerous accounts of various mental phenomena. William Osler commended the section on Dreams in the Bibliotheca Osleriana. It is not particularly highly regarded as a work of philosophy.

Castiglioni, History of medicine, p. 806. Osler 1709.
