The Lives of the English Poets; and a Criticism on Their Works.

Dublin: Printed for Messrs. Whitestone, Williams…[et al.], 1779. First separate edition, preceding the London separate edition by two years. This pirated Dublin edition had a slightly different title from the London edition. It also has additional material by Thomas Gray, “A Long Story” and “Ode to Music.” The Lives of the English Poets originally appeared as part of the sixty-eight volume set, lives and Works of the English Poets, 1779-81. Volume I expertly rebacked, with original backstrip laid down, some neat repairs to other hinges. Old ink signatures, some light worming at bottom corner of Volume 3, not affecting text, some light soiling at fore-edge. A very good, attractive set. In marbled board open-end slipcase. Contemporary calf. Gilt floral-decorated spines with burgundy and brown morocco labels. Three volumes, octavo. [4], 144, pp. 143-144 [repeated], pp. 145-536; [4], 496; [4], 399 pp. Item #7443

Chapman and Hazen, p. 159.
