London: Gresham Publishing Co., 1908. First edition. With eleven colored lithographed sectional plates and 500 text illustrations. Binding extremities slightly worn, a bit of rubbing and slight fraying to corners. Boards of both volumes have a few small bumps and scuffs. Minor soiling to front board of Vol. I. Scattered light foxing, some offsetting from plates. Some browning to the Three-Phase Induction Motor and the Automobile plates in Vol. II. Neat pencil signature on half-title of each volume. Dark green cloth, decoratively stamped in black and gilt. Two volumes, folio. xix, 201; xiv, 302 pp. Item #7213

A marvelous work, noted for the extraordinary sectional plates lithographed in full color, depicting a Babcock & Wilcox water-tube boiler, a steam engine, a Riedler-Curtis steam turbine, a locomotive, a Westinghouse quick-acting compressed-air brake, a continuous-current motor, a squirrel cage three-phase induction motor, an Otto gas engine, a Priestman oil engine, a diesel engine, and an automobile. The text was based to some extent on Le Mecanicien Moderne, “but the original has been widely departed from and amplified to bring the present work abreast of the times, and to make it representative of the best and most modern British practice” (foreword).
