Bergier (1718-1790), the French scholar and theologian, wrote several competent treatises in defense of Christianity against the attacks of the philosophes Voltaire, Holbach and Rousseau. The present work assaults the materialistic and atheistic views espoused by Holbach in his Systeme de la Nature, published the previous year.
