Refutation de la fausse relation du P. Ferrier Jesuite…

[n.p.:]: 1764. German armorial bookplate on front pastedown, old ink signature on title-page. A little light browning, but generally a very good copy. [Bound with:] [NICOLE, Pierre]. Les pernicieuses consequences de la nouvelle heresie des jesuites contre le Roy & contre l’Estat. Par un Advocat en Parlement. Seconde edition. [n.p.: n.d]. Quarto. 47 pp. This is a curious work. It is undated, and there is no indication of publisher or place, but it is labeled “second edition.” The first edition must have been published before 1666, when an English edition translated by John Evelyn appeared. The only edition listed by OCLC is dated 1687 and was published in Lille; that edition is held only by Duke University and the University of Wales. This work is sometimes attributed to Antoine Arnauld and Pierre Nicole. [and:] [WEIDNER, Johann Leonhard]. Elixir Iesuiticum Sive Quinta Essentia Iesuitarum; ex variis, inprimis pontificiis…collectore Gratiano Leosthene Saliceto. [n.p., Antwerp?: n.d., 1645?]. Quarto. 67 pp. Dedicated to the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Laud, who was convicted of treason and beheaded in 1645. This is a puzzling work. OCLC lists a longer work (448 pp.) of the same name, and locates copies at Harvard and Loyola Chicago (Backer-Sommervogel,; vol. 11, col. 70, no. 518). [and:] CLEMENT VIII. Cologne: 1662. Quarto.68 pp. Clement was Pope from 1536 to 1605. OCLC lists two copies of this book at Harvard and one at Duke University. Full stiff vellum with title in manuscript on spine. Two parts in one, small quarto. Ferrier (1619-1670 or 1674) was a French Jesuit who preached against the Jansenists. Rare:OCLC lists only the Johns Hopkins copy. [8], 120; 56 pp. Item #7070
