Sir Kenelm Digby (1603–1665) was an English philosopher, courtier, and, in his youth, noted adventurer. His father, Everard Digby, was executed for his involvement in the Gunpowder Plot. Nevertheless, Digby Jr. was able to rise above familial ignominy and led a storied career as a privateer for the Crown. The present work details his triumph over Venetian ships off the coast of Iskendrun, Turkey (historically Scanderoon). Allegedly, the Venetian ambassador to England was so incensed at the printing of this subsequent pamphlet, that he sought the imprisonment of the printer and the total confiscation of the pamphlet, leading to the original’s scarcity.
