Arthur M. Ellis (1875–1932) was a lawyer, Southern California historian, and a founding member of the Zamorano Club, as well as an early Club president. In his brief foreword, he states: "This little essay upon the work of those who design and produce books appeared as the introduction to a volume by Marius Audin published in Paris by G. Cres at Cie in 1924. We are indebted to its author, M. Henri Focillon, for permission to reproduce it, as well to Mrs. Johnson for her most faithful translation, and to Jeffries Banknote Company for painstaking linotype work.”.
