VII, [1 blank], 1-108 + 1 page publisher’s ads. Item #17988
Contains three sections: “Anton Tchekhov’s Note-Books”; “Themes, Thoughts, Notes, and Fragments”; and “Anton Tchekhov: Fragments of Recollections. By Maxim Gorky.” A translator’s notes alleges that present work’s contents had not yet been translated into English. The first section corresponds to a notebook that Chekhov kept from 1892 to 1904. The second, a collection of sheets found among Chekhov’s paper under a special cover titled “Themes, Thoughts, Notes, and Fragments.” The third, Gorky’s Reminiscences, were initially printed in Russia in 1906. While this work’s translation is attributed to Koteliansky and Leonard Woolf, and not Virginia (thus it does not appear in Kirkpatrick’s Woolf bibliography), we may infer that the translation process was similar to other Hogarth x Koteliansky endeavors, wherein Koteliansky “translated the Russian book into very bad English in double-spaced lines, that Mrs. Woolf went through the text with him, sentence by sentence, and then put the translation into good English.”.
