The ten woodcuts depict birds that Frasconi remembers from his childhood in Montevideo, Uruguay, particularly around the Rio de la Plata. The birds are listed by the Spanish and indigenous language names, as well as English. The birds are the bienteveo, hronero, calandria, churrinche, tijerete, teru teru, chingola, siete vestidos, chaja, and pirincho — tanagers, tyrants, mockingbirds, sparrows, and more.
