We could not find much information on the origin of these proofs. However, the originalsketches for the Gill woodcuts are held by Brown University and are dated March 17, 1936, for the title-page images and March 19, 1936 for the chapter images. The colophon of The Green Ship explains
that it was “completed on May Day 1936” and limited to 200 copies.

The Green Ship was written by Scottish architect and WWI veteran George Gordon MacFarlane (1885—1949) under pseudonym “Patrick Miller.” TheGolden Cockerel Press in London had published three of MacFarlane’s previous novels and then, in 1936, the present collaboration between
MacFarlane and his friend Eric Gill (1882-1940). Evan Gill, Eric Gill: A Bibliography, #294. Bibliography of the Golden Cockerel Press, #111.
