Ned Wayburn (1874-1942) was an American choreographer, theater director, and dance teacher during the 1920s. He taught six techniques: musical comedy, tapping and stepping, acrobatic work, American ballet, pointe, and ballroom. In 1905, he opened Ned Wayburn’s Training School for the Stage in New York City which became a notable school for theatrical dance. Wayburn’s dance school produced many celebrity Broadway dancers during the 1920s and 1930s. He trained dancers such as Ann Pennington, Gilda Gray, Fannie Brice, Ada May Weeks, Dorothy Dickson, and the Dolly Sisters. He also worked with Fred and Adele Astaire. Wayburn used the methods of Ida Simpson-Serven and Delsarte to emphasize the importance of strength training and athleticism for a dancer. His obituary in the New York Times called him “the most prominent director in the development of the modern American musical comedy with its emphasis on color, dancing and tuneful melody.” American National Biography.
