The Works of Horatio Walpole, Earl of Orford. In Five Volumes.

London: G.G. and J. Robinson, and J. Edwards, 1798. First collected edition of Walpole's (1717-1797) works, superintended by Mary Berry (1763-1852), Walpole's young protégé. He described Mary and her sister Amelia as "the best informed and the most perfect creatures I ever saw at their age" and bequeathed them his books and manuscripts, and the house and property at Little Strawberry Hill. Mary was a life-long journal writer, and her journals and letters have been praised in recent years for the light they throw on women's history. Illustrated with 166 copper-engraved portraits, plans and views, many double-page. Title-pages with copper-engraved vignettes. Joints of Volume V starting to crack, but firm, minor rubbing to joints and spine extremities with the occasional light chip. A very good, clean set. With the armorial bookplate of Scope Berdmore, Warden of Merton College, 1790-1810 and Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University from 1796 and 1797. Also with the armorial bookplate of Henry C. Compton, Esq., Manor House, Lyndhurst. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, gilt spines, with the printed label of Gilmour Bindery, Salisbury. Five volumes, quarto. xxiv, 577; [2], 576; vii, [1], 512; vii, 468; vi, 673 pp. Item #17592

During the following decades further installments were issued, beginning with that of Madame du Deffand, in 1810.
