Robert Charles Sands (1799-1832) was a New York-born poet, author, and the son of merchant, banker, and politician General Comfort Sands (1748-1834). He was a member of the “Knickerbocker Group,” named after a monthly New York magazine entitled The Knickerbocker; this group consisted of authors who contributed work to the magazine, which included Washington Irving (1783-1859), Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), Lydia Maria Child (1802-1880) and other writers who contributed to the magazine. Sands was also the founder of the Atlantic Magazine and, with William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878), was an editor of The New York Review. The present work, dedicated to Washington Irving, is a story written in verse, using an irregular measure that was imitative of the style used by Sir Walter Scott in his long narrative poem The Lay of the Last Minstrel (1805). The Bridal Vaumond is founded upon the legend of a withered, unhappy man who makes a supernatural bargain and is transformed into an attractive youthful hero.
