During the Summer of 1956 I was asked to participate in a series of discussions held at Santa Barbara State College on 'The Arts at Mid-Century.' The ideas which I expressed there are, in substance, the credo which I still find valid ten years later.
"...As never before we have seen a renaissance of lithography, engraving, and the woodcut both in the graphic arts and in printing. I am confirmed in my faith that the traditional arts of the book are not languishing and are not imperiled by ersatz devices which our technology has produced" (Introduction, p. iii).
