The Eliot Indian Bible leaf in this copy is from the Book of Psalms and contains Psalms 93-96. Title-page printed in black and blue. Original Eliot Indian Bible leaf tipped-in after title. Bookplate on front pastedown. A fine copy in a near fine glassine dust jacket with a few small nicks. In a blue cloth slipcase, slightly worn. Blue-gray cloth with gilt-lettered spine. Small quarto. With a leaf from the Eliot Indian Bible (Cambridge, Massachusetts,1663), the first Bible published in British North America and the first Bible translated from English into an indigenous American language. Puritan missionary John Eliot translated the Geneva Bible into the Massachusett language with support from the Society of for the Propagation of the Gospel in New England. Though the work first appeared in 1661 with only the New Testament, the 1663 edition was the first edition to include all sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments.
