Binding extremities lightly worn, hinges cracking but sound. Light foxing, as usual. A very good, bright copy. Original taupe pebbled cloth, gilt decoration and lettering on upper cover, gilt-ruled spine, lower cover decoratively stamped in blind. Folio. William Butterfield (1814-1900), the Victorian Gothic revival architect, suggested that Mary Barber write this book because of her extensive knowledge of the subject. Her mission was to draw attention to the techniques and colour combinations of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in connection with the contemporary restoration of churches. She died before the book was to be published, and Butterfield saw it through the press.
