“…In [Mexico on Stone], [Mathes] presents the history and evolution of a virtually unstudied Mexican art form and provides examples of subject matter and the differing quality and style of individual lithographers through twenty-three monochrome or tinted plates and eight full color reproductions. Dr. Mathes also demonstrates the relationship of lithography to printing and supplies a bibliographical checklist of major Mexican lithographic works, with a directory of their producers. Mexico on Stone is the first treatment in English of the subject, and possibly the first study in any language of the development of lithography and chromolithography in areas of Mexico outside the capital city” (from the prospectus).
