The Index of 1704, printed under Pope Innocent XI (1611-1689). An additional appendix to the 1704 edition was printed in 1739. The following edition was dated 1744, contains an appendix dated 1755 and a listing of Richardson's Pamela in the French translation. The first official index (the Pauline Index) was promulgated in 1559 under Pope Paul IV. The 20th and final edition appeared in 1948 under Pope Paul VI. It was officially abolished in 1966.

After the preliminary material, the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, being a list of printed works that were deemed heretical, anti-clerical, or highly offensive and, thus, banned by the Catholic Church, follows in alphabetical order. Roman Catholic authors whose works appeared on the list had the opportunity to defend their writings and create new editions of their respective works with the necessary corrections and deletions with the purposes of avoiding or limiting a ban.
