Karl Pearson (1857-1936), who founded the first university statistics department at University College London, made a major contribution to the methodology of science in The Grammar of Science (1892), established the discipline of mathematical statistics, and was Francis Galton’s (1822-1911) leading disciple, applying statistics to the study of heredity and evolution. The Chances of Death and Other Studies in Evolution is an important collection of his early essays.
