London: Printed for T. Waller... 1748. First edition. Title-page and last page of text browned, three small holes in title-page to remove signature. A good copy. Disbound. Octavo. 84 pp. Item #15468

Whalley (1722-1701) published Essay on the Manner of Writing History in 1746, which itself was the first separate publication on the subject. The present essay was, however, more ground-breaking, proving that Shakespeare had a good deal more knowledge than Ben Jonson thought. He also analyzes Shakespeare's imaginative use of this knowledge. This short essay is one of the more innovative expositions of Shakespeare in the eighteenth century.
