The text, in Monotype Univers, was composed and cast in hot metal by Chris Stern at Stern & Faye Printers, Sedro-Woolley, Washington. The paper was commissioned from Cartiera Magnani paper mill in Italy. Printed on an 1846 Columbian hand-press by Marnie Powers-Torrey and Jennifer Sorenson, and bound at BookLab II by Craig Jensen. The boards are a combination of specially made anodized aluminum and wood reclaimed from a single sycamore tree. The essay, commissioned by the Red Butte Press, marks the first time that William McDonough’s comprehensive design philosophy has been presented. It examines the complex relationship between natural and urban landscapes in Western American cities. William McDonough is an internationally celebrated author and architect and the only individual to have received the 'Presidential Award for Sustainable Development'. Time magazine named him a 'hero of the planet' in 1999, and in 2004 he was awarded the “National Design Award- Environment” by the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.
