Leipzig: bey Weidmanns Erben und Reich, 1776. First (?) edition of this translation of The Vicar of Wakefield by Johann Joachim Christoph Bode (1730-1793). Bode was an admired translator who produced German editions of Tristram Shandy, Montaigne’s Essays, and Marmontel’s Incas. This is the earliest edition of the Bode translation listed in OCLC. Bode was also a distinguished musician and composer. Engraved frontispiece and title-page vignette by Chodowiecki. Occasional light foxing, but a very good copy overall. Later marbled wrappers, with some rubbing. Octavo. xiv, 463, [1] pp. Item #12772
