Susanne Curchod Necker (1739-1794) was the wife of Swiss financier Jacques Necker. In her youth she was close to Edward Gibbon, who wanted to marry her, but his father opposed the match. She maintained a celebrated Paris salon, which was frequented by many eminent authors, including Diderot, D’Alembert, Morelet, Buffon, Marmontel, and Chastelux. She was the mother of Madame de Staël.
