Freylinghausen (1670-1730) studied theology at the Universities of Jena and Halle. He was minister of St. Ulrich’s Church and inspector of the Public School at Halle. He also wrote and composed forty-four hymns. He also published the first edition of his GeistreichesGesangbuch (Spiritual Hymnal). The 1704 edition included 683 hymns (83 of them by Paul Gerhardt) with 174 hymn tunes. This was the most important hymn collection of the Pietistic period of Lutheran hymnody.
